As part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry, NJMS is one of eight schools on five regional campuses that serve as gateways to opportunities in medicine, dentistry, research, public health, nursing, and the full spectrum of allied health careers. Anesthesiology is one of twelve divisions under the Clinical Sciences Department of NJMS.
Newark is undergoing both an economic and cultural renaissance with the recent opening of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and other cultural institutions. Newark is an active business and industrial center with a population of over 275,000. Affordable housing is available in the city as well as surrounding urban and suburban areas. Newark is a transportation hub as well with the thriving Newark Airport, Penn Station-Newark railroad station, a city subway system and extensive bus lines only minutes away from our campus.
Living in our near Newark, New Jersey's largest city, offers virtually unlimited opportunities to enjoy cultural, recreational and educational pursuits. The university resides in the city's vibrant and multicultural University Heights district near to the campuses of Rutgers University - Newark, the Rutgers Center for Law and Justice, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Essex County College, and the developing University Heights Science Park.
Some unique cultural institutions, parks and sports arenas right in Newark include:
- The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) opened on the waterfront in the heart of the city in 1997. This facility includes a 3000 seat opera house, a 2500 seat concert hall and an 1800 seat music theatre. NJPAC is second only to the largest cultural center in the United States – New York’s Lincoln Center.
- The Newark Museum where a 7 million dollar expansion was recently completed
- Newark Public Library which not only houses an extensive collection of books and research material, but also presents exhibits and other programs.
- New Jersey Arts Council where information and links to other arts and historical information can be found
- Newark Symphony Hall a 2800 seat concert hall.
- Branch Brook Park delights visitors with a spectacular display of cherry blossoms every spring.
- Bears Stadium was recently completed in downtown Newark and is the home of Newark’s minor league baseball team, the Newark Bears.
The Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex is only 15 minutes away and presents various sporting events including basketball, football, hockey and soccer as well as concerts and nightly horse racing. The complex includes the Continental Airlines Arena, Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands Racetrack. New York City and all that it has to offer is only minutes away. Public or private transportation is easily accessible right on our campus.
Centrally located in the state, travel from Newark to many recreational and entertainment areas both north and south of the city is very convenient. (Visit the State of New Jersey Travel and Tourism Bureau .) The mountain and lake region in the north of the State is replete with scenic beauty and picturesque towns. Boating, fishing, hiking and camping facilities are found at Lake Hopatcong, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and High Point State Park. This part of the State also has excellent skiing, snowboarding and tubing at various area resorts such as Great Gorge, Mountain Creek and Vernon Valley.
New Jersey has 127 miles of white sandy beaches where visitors can enjoy the surf, sand, fun and excitement of the famous Jersey Shore. Visitors can enjoy everything from nature walks in protected wetlands, to joining festive crowds up and down a bustling boardwalk, to gaming in one of Atlantic City's 13 casino resorts. The relaxation, entertainment, and recreational activities available at the New Jersey shore are endless and only one or two hours from campus.
As you can see, Newark is an ideal locale to live and work throughout your residency training.
