Welcome to Emergency Medicine at New Jersey Medical School!
The Emergency Medicine Residency of NJMS is a dynamic and innovative program. We provide excellent training for our residents in a high volume, high acuity, urban environment.
We are located at an inner-city center that sees
- Wide diversity of patients from many countries and cultures
- High volume of patients, with over 98,000 visits last year
- High acuity patients with over 20% of the patients we see admitted, including many to critical care units
We are the only level 1 trauma center in northern NJ
- Over 5,900 trauma pantents seen annually in our ED, with an average of three victims of penetrating trauma treated daily.
- Mobile ICU units and Northstar Helicopter based from UH
- We are staffed with trauma surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic surgery 24/7
We are a large tertiary care center that provides care to patients with a wide array of acute pathology that includes
- Liver transplant service
- Stroke Center
- Heart center with EKG transmission to cardiology fellows via smartphone and cardiac cathater lab availability 24 hours
- Medical control for an EMS department that receives 120,000 calls annually
- Receiving hospital for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
- Poison Control Center
- MICU, SICU
We are a large pediatric tertiary care center
- Pediatric ED with over 19,000 visits annually
- PICU, NICU
We are the primary teaching site for New Jersey Medical School (NJMS)
- Mandatory clerkship for 4th year students
- Residents have opportunities to serve as teachers and mentors for all 4th year students
Our program is resident driven
- Monthly Resident - to - Resident, as well as Resident - to - Attending meetings to discuss future directions of the program
- Residents are active contributors to the curriculum, and resident input is sought after every rotation
- Residents participate in administrative meetings and committees
