Hello
and welcome to Emergency Medicine at UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School!
We
are happy that you are interested in our program and hope to give you some information
about who we are and how residents are trained here in Emergency Medicine.
First, let us tell you a little history about our hospital. The city of Newark
developed the City Hospital in 1882 to care for its sick and indigent population.
Over the years as the need for space increased, the hospital experienced several
transformations and moved several times adjusting to its ever increasing needs.
In 1970, the state government established the College of Medicine and Dentistry
of New Jersey on its current campus, which was awarded university status in
1981. Today, UMDNJ has 8 schools and 14 residencies, including its newest program,
Emergency Medicine, begun in 2004.
We are fortunate to be in a city of nearly a half million people that provide
our residents with many different experiences. Our residents spend most of their
time in the University Hospital where we care for patients mainly from an urban
environment but also from the surrounding suburbs. Our location additionally
challenges us with injuries and exposures from a large nearby industrial area,
as well as an international airport and seaport that is often a window on the
medical problems of the world. We feel this wide variety provides our residents
with an excellent combination of patient types, illnesses, and experiences.
Our residents are entrusted with critically ill patients and have primary responsibility
over their patients.
This has been an exciting year for Emergency Medicine at UMDNJ/NJMS. In
April 2009, the Division of Emergency Medicine separated from the Department
of Surgery and became its own independent department. We also graduated
our first class of residents in June 2009 and are very excited that three of
our graduates chose to stay on as faculty in our newly formed Department.
Our last interview season went very well and we received 10% more applications
than the previous year, filling early in our rank list. Our incoming residents
are strong performers, half of whom rotated with us in the ED last year. This
fall, we will of course participate in ERAS and continue recruiting strong applicants.
We anticipate an even greater turnout than before and ever more competitive
candidates.
Our program has an excellent faculty,
outstanding facilities, and interesting and challenging patients to make our chosen
careers as fulfilling as we could want them to be. We hope that you will take
a look at our program and we look forward to meeting you.
