An Outreach Program...
"...with the health of the community
at heart"
This unique student run-outreach program, initiated in 1992, is
designed to serve the Newark community through health promotion and disease
prevention. Student volunteers are recruited from all schools on the UMDNJ-Newark
campus to serve as health advocates to promote healthy lifestyles among the
residents of Newark communities.
C2000 volunteers develop skills in clinical medicine and patient education,
in addition to fostering relationships between UMDNJ and the greater Newark
community.
The three components of C2000 are:
- Health Fairs and Patient Education
...assessing community health needs, screenings
for preventable medical conditions, patient education.
- Adult and Youth Workshops
...interactive workshops conducted
at churches, afterschool programs, and local organizations to address specific
health topics.
- Lecture Series
...student volunteers participate in a "Health of Our
Community" lecture series at UMDNJ. Lectures focus on developing clinical
skills, conducting workshops, and patient education.
The success of this program earned UMD-New Jersey Medical School national recognition
in 1994, when it was awarded a "Health of the Public" grant from the Pew Charitable
Trusts and RWJ Foundation, and received the Association of American Medical
Colleges (AAMC) Outstanding Community Service Award.
