Dr. Mark Johnson, professor and chair, department of family medicine, serves as the project director for the Consortium. Along with co-directors, Drs. Paulette Stanford , associate professor of pediatrics and Debbie Salas-Lopez, assistant professor of medicine.  The goal of the Consortium is to ensure continued growth of the research culture that already exists within the three departments and to unite the research activities and maximize our potential.

The following four research working groups have been identified (through Faculty Research Portfolios) , as areas of interest among our primary care researchers: Childhood Obesity Working Group, Educational Research Working Group, The Working Group on Minority and Health Disparities, and Diabetes Mellitus Working Group. These working groups are designed as brainstorming sessions that allow researchers to network, initiate and foster collaborative research projects.

The PCRC Workshop/Lecture Series are conducted throughout the year by both internal and external senior researchers, who serve as mentors to our faculty and further promote faculty development.

The Consortium held its first research retreat, Primary Care Retreat: Strengthening Our Common Ties on October 8, 2005 in Long Branch NJ . Keynote speaker, Joseph E. Scherger, MD MPH, clinical professor of family medicine at the University of California-San Diego, shared his vision of primary care in the 21 st century and called for collaboration in education and research among primary care faculty. Over sixty faculty members from the departments of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine, as well as Ob/Gyn, Psychiatry and the School of Nursing attended the retreat.

Our second retreat (part of the PCRC 2006 Lecture Series), entitled Research in Primary Care: Strengthening Methodology and Other Skills, was a two-day event held on September 16-17, 2006 on our Newark campus. The keynote speaker, Neil Powe, MD MPH MBA, professor of medicine, epidemiology and health policy and management at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, lectured on clinical research domains, issues and methods for primary care research. The retreat focused on identifying areas of clinical research germane to primary care, types of research that are fundamental to advancing primary care, and an overview of different methods and training avenues for primary care research.

The PCRC will host a two day grant writing workshop on March 28-29, 2007 (Stanley S. Bergen Building, Room 256B, from 8:30am to 4:30pm, both days).  Mr. William Hendricson, assistant dean for education and faculty development at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will be the guest lecturer and facilitator.  The workshop will focus on building, strengthening and polishing proposal writing skills.  For registration and additional information, please contact Indira Debchoudhury (debchoin@umdnj.edu) .
