Dementia
Recognition
and Initial Assessment of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias :
Clinical Practice Guideline No. 19. : AHCPR
Publication No. 97-0702: November 1996
Early recognition and initial assessment of dementia was selected by the
Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) as a subject for the development
of a Clinical Practice Guideline for several reasons: the scope of the problem
is significant, early-stage dementia is often misdiagnosed, costs associated
with dementia are high, and early recognition of the condition has important
benefits. Because the most prevalent dementing illness in the United States
is Alzheimer's disease, it is used as a model for discussions in this guideline,
unless otherwise noted.
