Disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) remains an important
cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, particularly in the
very young, the elderly, and persons with certain high-risk conditions. Pneumococcal
pneumonia accounts for 10%-25% of all pneumonias and an estimated 40,000 deaths
annually (1).
