Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
Director: David Bleich, MD
The Division consists of full-time faculty located at NJMS-
University Hospital complemented by full-time and part-time faculty at the
VA Health system in East Orange and Lyons, NJ. Our activities extend to the
Endocrine Group at Hackensack University Hospital and to collaboration with
the scientists at Hackensack Research Center. Other integrations exist with
the Reproductive Endocrinology Group in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatric Endocrinology
and the Neurological Services at UMDNJ. This network of collaborations and
exchanges provide a rich, full-spectrum experience for fellows, medical residents
and senior medical students.
Education:
Undergraduate
- Endocrinology provides a major teaching segment in Pathophysiology of
Disease to second year medical students, as part of the Introduction to
Clinical Science Course (ICS).
- We offer elective rotations in "Clinical Endocrinology" for
junior and senior medical students.
Graduate
- We offer elective rotations in "Clinical Endocrinology" for
Internal Medicine residents at R1, R2, and R3 years.
- We offer "Adult Endocrinology" experience for fellows in Pediatric/Endocrinology
and Reproductive/Endocrinology.
Endocrinology Fellowship Program
We offer a 2-year ACGME accredited Endocrinology Fellowship Program leading
to ABIM Subspecialty Boards in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases.
Patient Care:
Since modern-day Endocrinology is largely outpatient based, we have developed
excellent weekly teaching clinics at our major teaching sites:
- Endocrinology Clinic University Hospital
- Endocrine Clinic VA East Orange
- Diabetes Clinic University Hospital
- Diabetes Clinic VA East Orange
- Metabolic Bone Clinic Lyons VA
- Obesity Control Clinic University Hospital
These clinics provide top-notch care to our large, indigent population while
providing clinical experience to the Endocrine trainee, all under attending
supervision.
- Private patient consultations are provided on a limited basis by our full-time
and part-time faculty in Endocrinology in a private practice setting at
the Doctors Office Center (DOC).
