Mission Statement
The department of Neurology and Neuroscience is comprised of physicians, physician-scientists
and scientists with a broad range of expertise in the neurological sciences,
but with superior expertise in Multiple Sclerosis and neuroimmunology research,
endovascular treatment of acute stroke, autism and epilepsy including epilepsy
surgery. The department has 3 divisions and 10
centers of excellence. Altogether the department has over
50 faculty of which 15 are basic scientists
with the remainder clinicians or clinician scientists. The department was
founded in 1970 with Dr. Stuart Cook as Chairman. Dr. Cook served the department
as Chair until 1999 when he was promoted to the President of UMDNJ. Dr. Stephen
S. Kamin is presently Chair of the department.
The Department of Neurology and Neuroscience participates in all of the major
missions of the New Jersey Medical School. Our faculty deliver outstanding clinical
care to patients living with a variety of neurological disorders and they actively
participate in nationally recognized clinical, translational and basic neuroscience
research. Education is a major mission of the department that includes graduate,
undergraduate medical education and residency training. The residency program
includes the participation of Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center and the VA
Hospital as well as University Hospital, providing the opportunity to practice
neurology in a variety of hospital settings.
