Neurology Residency Program

The UMDNJ Neurology Residency Program fufills the requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, leading to eligibility for board certification in neurology.

First Postgraduate Year Training (PGY-1).

Residents must complete at least one year of preliminary training in internal medicine, prior to their neurology residency. We offer an integrated 4-year program which includes the PGY-1 year. No separate application is necessary.

All PGY-2 positions whether in the three year program or the integrated four year program are available only through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

A representative residency curriculum is provided in this website, although individual preferences and new opportunities allow for some variation.

In the first year of neurology training, junior residents spend nine months on the Neurology Ward Services and participate in various out patient clinics. They have one month of pediatric neurology, and one month each of elective activity, and vacation. In the second and third years of neurology training, senior residents supervise activities on the Neurology Ward and offer consultation services. Their exposure to pediatric neurology continues, and they have progressively more time for elective rotations. On-call duties average once every four nights in the PGY-2 year, every five nights in the PGY-3 year and once a week in the PGY-4 year.

Adult neurology residents receive training in pediatric neurology on the active Pediatric Neurology Services at University Hospital under the supervision of three full-time pediatric neurologists and three clinical fellows. These rotations, combined with ongoing neuropediatric lectures and clinical conferences, afford resident physicians insight into the unique aspects of neurological disorders that affect the pediatric population.

UMDNJ offers additional specialty training (designated as a fellowship program) in the following areas for physicians who have completed a neurology residency:

  • Vascular neurology (ACGME-accredited)
  • Neuromuscular medicine (ACGME-accredited)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Neurosurgical endovascular neuroradiology
