Residents are exposed to gross and microscopic neuropathology through two sessions monthly at University Hospital that concentrate on material from current clinical cases. An every other week neurophysiology conference presents the principles of EEG and EMG in a series of formal lectures. On a rotating basis, neurology residents participate in the Resident Journal Club by preparing comprehensive reviews of current neurologic topics. Clinical management decisions are discussed at the monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference. Cerebrovascular disorders are analyzed at weekly stroke conferences. Throughout the academic year, resident physicians are encouraged to attend basic science and research seminars sponsored by the UMDNJ Department of Neurosciences. Ongoing didactic lectures covering topics in psychiatry and neuro-ophthalmology augment clinical patient activities in these fields. Each year, residents take the American Academy of Neurology-American Neurological Association In-Service Training Examination as a self-assessment and to prepare for the Neurology Board Examination. In summary, the UMDNJ Neurology Residency Program's extensive formal
educational activities provide in-depth exposure to clinical neurology
and the neurosciences. This program fosters the development of mature,
competent neurologists by accompanying clinical experience with a wide
variety of neurological and neurosurgical conditions and by being attendant
to the personal needs of resident physicians. |
