Musculoskeletal Oncology |

Musculoskeletal Oncology is the subspecialty that deals primarily with the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of bones, muscles, tendons and joints. The treatment of tumors may require surgical intervention such as biopsy for diagnosis, tumor resection with local treatment, tumor resection with major limb reconstruction or amputation. In nearly all cases, a team approach is necessary to ensure that surgery is combined with appropriate radiation therapy or chemotherapy if needed. Treatment of such problems is very complicated and requires the coordination of a team of specialists including oncologists (medical cancer specialists), radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists.
