The
goal of this fellowship is to provide a training program that will allow
the fellow the skill and clinical acumen for diagnosis and appropriate
treatment of complex Orthopaedic Trauma and Reconstructive patients, prepare
him for a career in academic medicine, and provide exposure to clinical
and / or basic science research opportunities that will allow him to contribute
to the advancement of the field of Orthopaedic Traumatology. The
fellow will be given the opportunity to become proficient with managing
the acute issues and definitive treatment of multi-trauma patients, severe
peri-articular and soft tissue injuries. As well, the fellow will
become experienced with pelvic and acetabular surgery and the treatment
of complications of Orthopaedic Trauma patients (e.g. nonunions, malunions,
post-traumatic degenerative disease requiring fusion or arthroplasty,
osteomyelitis treatment, etc.). The fellow will be working with
3 fellowship trained Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons (Frank A. Liporace MD,
Mark C. Reilly MD, and Michael S. Sirkin MD).
To ensure clinical proficiency, the fellow will have the opportunity to
evaluate patients in the emergency room, clinic, and office settings.
The fellow will be involved with the direct work-up and treatment planning
of the patients. All surgical procedures will be performed with
the fellow acting as the primary surgeon. Surgical options and pre-operative
planning will be discussed with the three full-time Orthopaedic Traumatology
attendings. The fellow will function as primary attending under
the supervision of the three full-time Orthopaedic Traumatology attendings.
As well, the fellow will be expected to produce at least 2 projects that
are of the quality necessary for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
The fellow will spend 20% of his time (1 day / week) conducting clinical
and / or laboratory research and conducting educational activities.
Weekly journal club and didactic sessions will allow for a broadened basic
science and Orthopaedic Trauma literature knowledge base. The fellow
will also be responsible for teaching residents and medical students rotating
on the Orthopaedic Trauma service to develop teaching skills necessary
for an academic career. The fellow will also participate in clinical
and basic science research in conjunction with the four full-time orthopedic
basic scientists and attendings.
