Program Offered

The program, which utilizes a consortium of three teaching hospitals, is approved for four years of combined training in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology. NJMS-Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine encourages resident participation in the research activity of the Department and provides an opportunity to qualified candidates for obtaining a PhD in Pathology from the UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Residents also participate in teaching of medical students. Two years of the program involve training in Autopsy and Surgical Pathology, including Cytopathology, Neuropathology, Forensics, and Cyto- and Histochemistry. Two more years are devoted to Clinical Pathology with rotations in the Divisions of Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Coagulation, Tissue Typing, Serology, Immunology, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Pathology, and Hematology. However, a more prolonged period in an area of special interest, or research, can be substituted for one or two rotations. Elective subspecialty training is available to interested individuals in areas of Surgical Pathology, Pediatric Pathology, Neuropathology, and other areas of Clinical Pathology. A residency appointment in the program involves rotational assignments through University Hospital and the affiliated institutions during the four-year training period with limited PGY-5 Anatomic Pathology positions available. The integrated program, utilizing the particular strengths at each of the hospitals, exposes the trainees to a wide variety of material, expertise, and practice settings.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS

The program has 14 residents for 4/5-year training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology including two possible PGY-5 AP subspecialty positions.
