University Hospital, opened in 1979 as the main teaching hospital
of UMDNJ - New Jersey Medical School, provides primary care for citizens of
Newark as well as specialized tertiary care for patients from throughout New
Jersey and surrounding states. University Hospital is dedicated to providing
the best in both patient care and resident education, while pioneering new forms
of treatment for a wide range of diseases. There are currently more than five
hundred residents training in eighteen accredited University Hospital affiliated
programs.
The University Institute for Children's Health provides the
most comprehensive and sophisticated pediatric services available in northern
New Jersey. Staffed by sixty-five pediatricians and twenty pediatric surgeons
representing thirty-five divisions, the Institute provides the full spectrum
of primary through tertiary care for infants, children and adolescents. It houses
the Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center (the first National Pediatric HIV Resource
Center) and the Sammy Davis, Jr. Liver Institute, home of the only liver transplant
program in the state of New Jersey. University Hospital is also the site of
the New Jersey Trauma Center, the Level I Trauma facility for the northern half
of New Jersey. The Trauma Center treats upward of 2,000 trauma victims per year,
many of them infants and children.
There are 134 pediatric beds at University Hospital consisting
of a 30-bed infant/child unit, a 15-bed adolescent unit, an 11-bed PICU, 28-bed
NICU, 25-bed Term Nursery and a 25-bed intermediate Care Nursery. More than
2,000 newborns are delivered annually at the hospital, many of them high risk.
Last year approximately 32,000 patients visited the ambulatory practices and
Pediatric Emergency Department.
Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is a 500-bed teaching
hospital located in Bergen County, about thirty minutes north of Newark.
HUMC has two inpatient pediatric units, each about twenty beds. One is a general
pediatric unit and one houses the Hematology/Oncology patients. There is also
a PICU, NICU and an active ambulatory service. The full-time pediatric attending
staff numbers about twenty, all of whom are faculty members of the NJMS Department
of Pediatrics. Twelve residents per month are assigned to HUMC, one of whom
is one of our two Chief Residents.
Residents are assigned to Hackensack for two months in the PL-1 year, three
months in the PL-2 year and two to three months in the PL-3 year, rotating on
all services except the NICU. Morning Report, attending rounds and noontime
lectures are all conducted by the HUMC faculty.
St. Michael's Medical Center (SMMC) is an urban community hospital
with a twenty-bed pediatric inpatient unit, term nursery, active primary care
center and an emergency room staffed by ER-trained physicians. Four residents
are assigned to St. Michael's each month at the PL-2 and PL-3 level to cover
the inpatient and ambulatory services and respond to L&D when necessary.
The NJMS Division of Neonatology is responsible for patient care and resident
supervision for the newborn service at SMMC; sick newborns are transported to
University Hospital. Similarly, critically ill infants and children are transported
to the PICU at University Hospital.
Morning Report is conducted by the site director; attending
rounds and noontime conferences are conducted by the SMMC staff and the NJMS
faculty.
