The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology provides the Dental Student with a course in Pharmacology designed to prepare the student for the rational and safe use of drugs in the control, prevention or therapy of human disease. The course consists of 7 units: 1) Autonomic Drugs, 2) The Pharmacology of Hypertension, 3) The Pharmacology of Cardiac Control, 4) Endocrine Pharmacology, 5) Chemotherapeutic Agents, 6) Principles of General and Sedation Anesthesiology (including CNS drugs), and 7) Principles of Toxicology.

Special attention is given to those drugs that may be prescribed for medical reasons. The course provides an overview of those topics of importance to the Dentist who must be aware of the complete health needs of patients and be able to discuss these subjects with other health professionals. In addition, the unit on Chemotherapeutic Agents provides an extensive introduction to those agents that the practicing Dentist will utilize for control of infection.
