Topics in Medical Pharmacology for the Dentist

The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology provides the Dental Student with
a course in Pharmacology designed to prepare the student for the rational and
safe use of drugs in the control, prevention or therapy of human disease. The
course consists of 7 units: 1) Autonomic Drugs, 2) The Pharmacology of Hypertension,
3) The Pharmacology of Cardiac Control, 4) Endocrine Pharmacology, 5) Chemotherapeutic
Agents, 6) Principles of General and Sedation Anesthesiology (including CNS
drugs), and 7) Principles of Toxicology.
Special attention is given to those drugs that may be prescribed for medical
reasons. The course provides an overview of those topics of importance to the
Dentist who must be aware of the complete health needs of patients and be able
to discuss these subjects with other health professionals. In addition, the
unit on Chemotherapeutic Agents provides an extensive introduction to those
agents that the practicing Dentist will utilize for control of infection.
