M.P.H. CURRICULUM SUMMARY
The M.P.H. degree provides students with a clear understanding
of the roles of the core disciplines in public health. It also provides students
with sufficient knowledge of the theory and terminology used by these disciplines
to allow effective participation in interdisciplinary public health efforts
and with specialized skills in at least one public health discipline. Your area
of specialization should play an important role in your choice of Department.
Students seeking the M.P.H. degree must complete 45 credits
of academic work with an average grade of B or better. Fulltime students
may complete the degree requirements within one and onehalf years but it usually
will require two years. Parttime students may take up to five years to complete
the coursework but should satisfy the core requirements within two and onehalf
years of matriculation. The coursework is distributed as follows:

15 CREDITS in core areas of public health. Students in all Departments must
take the following five courses:
9—15 CREDITS of courses required by the Department. These
courses are listed in this catalog under the Division descriptions. Students
enrolled in the Piscataway/New Brunswick Campus may concentrate in one of the
following Departments: Biometrics Environmental and Occupational Health Epidemiology
Health Education and Behavioral Science or Health Systems and Policy. Students
enrolled on the Newark Campus may concentrate in Dental Public Health Quantitative
Methods: Epidemiology and Biostatistics or Urban Health Administration . Students
enrolled on the Stratford Campus may concentrate in Health Systems and Policy.
9—15 CREDITS of elective courses are required.
6 CREDITS devoted to a final integrating experience that includes
a fieldwork project a final written report and an oral presentation. In some
divisions (those based in Newark) students actively registered for fieldwork
must attend a monthly fieldwork seminar to discuss issues related to their fieldwork
project. One (1) credit is given to plan the fieldwork project and five (5)
credits are given for implementation and write-up.
Information related specifically to Biostatistics/Biometrics can be obtained
from Michael Brimacombe Ph.D. at brimacmb@umdnj.edu
Doctoral Programs (Ph.D. and Dr. P.H.)
in Public Health |
The UMDNJSchool of Public Health offers
two Doctoral degrees. The Ph.D. and the Dr.P.H. in Public Health is sponsored
by the Divisions of Biometrics Epidemiology Environmental and Occupational
Health Health Education and Behavioral Science and Health Systems and
Policy. Only a small number of students with superior academic potential
are admitted for Doctoral study. The academic progress of all doctoral
students is monitored by a single Doctoral Program Committee. All doctoral
degrees are currently offered on the Piscataway/New Brunswick Campus.
The Ph.D. and Dr.P.H. in Biometrics and Epidemiology started on the Newark
Campus in September of 2002. Details on the doctoral program can be found
at http://sph.umdnj.edu/degree/Doctor.htm

Intensive (Day Long) Seminar in Research Methods
Drs. Brimacombe and Holland offer a one-day workshop, "Quantitative
Methods in Clinical Research: Basic Methods in the Design and Analysis of Experiments."
This course is offered regularly on an on-going basis, approximately once each
quarter. The workshop addresses statistical issues related to study design and
sample size which arise as one plan an experiment, and the statistical analysis
methods used to understand the results. There is substantial emphasis on meeting
the expectations of grant funding agencies such as NIH. The target audience
is residents, fellows, new faculty, and others who need an introduction to elementary
guidelines on statistical rigor and fundability. There is no charge to UMDNJ
affiliated persons for this course; class size is roughly 15 - 20 each session.
