Vision

Promoting the application of epidemiologic principles to the practice of HIV surveillance, prevention, care and treatment

Mission

Develop a program of epidemiologic research, consultation and service in HIV surveillance, prevention, care and treatment with a focus on the greater Newark area

5. Description of Activities

  • Epidemiologic consultants to public health and academic researchers on HIV-related topics
  • Analysis of HIV/AIDS datasets
  • Developing a portfolio of research activities and grants; conducting epidemiologic investigations of: the impact of HIV/AIDS in the greater Newark area, prevention successes and challenges, and care and treatment access and utilization

8. Opportunities for students

A number of student projects are available or in development including:

  • Assisting NJHA, NJDHSS and others to conduct a survey of NJ hospitals which provide obstetrical services to assess policies and practices for rapid HIV testing in labor and delivery
  • Analyzing data from a survey of HIV testing and high risk behaviors in injection drug-users, men who have sex with men, and high-risk heterosexuals
  • Analyzing data on utilization of rapid-testing services in HIV counseling and testing settings
  • Participating in formative research to identify potential sampling venues for behavioral surveys in high risk heterosexuals in the Newark metropolitan area
