Preventive Medicine & Community Health
Vision, Mission, and Goals
Vision: The health and well being of individuals and groups in Newark and beyond will be improved through the application of preventive medicine and public health and its related disciplines by faculty of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health (DPMCH) and by its students.
Mission: The DPMCH will provide training, conduct research and offer services to the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) community including students, staff, faculty, patients, and to communities of Newark and beyond to facilitate real solutions to important health problems.
Administrative Goals
Goal 1: The faculty of DPMCH will gather a corps of public health professionals who will contribute to the public's health both locally and beyond.
Goal 2: DPMCH will effectively use resources provided by NJMS and other revenue generated through service, research and teaching to meet financial obligations to current faculty and staff and generate additional resources that can be used for faculty growth and seed money for faculty projects.
Service Goals
Goal 3: Faculty of DPMCH will provide public health and/or clinical services in order to meet the critical needs of NJMS and the communities it serves and/or to develop models of new and effective models of service delivery.
Goal 4: Faculty and staff of DPMCH will endeavor to provide biostatistical consulting services for faculty of NJMS and will strive to become a regional resource (e.g. Biostatistics Core Facility).
Goal 5: Faculty and staff of DPMCH will endeavor to establish partnerships with governmental agencies and other advisory boards that practice public health.
Goal 6: DPMCH will provide direct clinical services.
Training Goals
Goal 7: Training of NJMS Students: DPMCH will teach the required and elective courses for students of NJMS and participate in curriculum development.
Goal 8: DPMCH will offer training for residents, staff, and faculty of NJMS.
Goal 9: DPMCH will actively participate in the Newark Campus of the School of Public Health.
Goal 10: DPMCH will facilitate training in public health of veterans of national service programs.
Goal 11: DPMCH will develop a preventive medicine residency and will develop combined clinical-preventive medicine residencies for residents.
Goal 12: Continuing and public information: DPMCH will offer training and education for professionals working in the community and community residents.
Goal 13: Case Based Training: Increase the spectrum and number of cases available for training health professionals
Research Goals
Goal 14: Faculty of DPMCH will support researchers of NJMS and beyond who require biostatistical and epidemiologic expertise to conduct research.
Goal 15: Faculty of DPMCH will develop areas of research expertise and initiate research projects for which they will serve as principal investigators.
