ACTING INTERNSHIP IN SURGERY

Goals and objectives

This Acting Internship in Surgery seeks to enhance the skills acquired during the third-year clerkship and provide the fourth-year student with the opportunity to function as a first-year surgical resident. With supervision by senior residents and attendings the acting intern will become proficient in the diagnosis and management of surgical problems. Critical decision making will be stressed so that students planning and not planning a career in surgery will gain experience in the timing of surgical consultation.

Primary, secondary and tertiary care problems are addressed in the clinics and in-patient services.

The student will:

Assume responsibility for the care of his/her assigned patients.

Become proficient in eliciting a coprehensive history and conducting a thorough physical examination.

Devise and implement an appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Evaluate the necessity for emergent treatment.

Formulate a plan of action and consider differential diagnoses.

Acquire proficiency in managing surgical problems.

Acquire technical skills for several surgical operations.

Expand his/her knowledge of surgery and understanding the pathophysiology of surgical diseases.

Develop skills in communicating with patients, families and hospital personnel.

Gain confidence in his/her ability to function as a first-year resident.

General Surgery (VA) George Tsiouslias, M.D., (973) 676-1000 ext. 1846: One (1); Mandatory/Elective (combined) position per rotation can be accommodated. (Priority to 4th-year mandatory AI).

Trauma Team (UH) David Livingston, M.D.; (973) 972-6869: A maximum of two (2) Mandatory /Elective (combined) positions per rotation can be accommodated. (Priority to 4th-year Mandatory AI).

SICU (UH) Anne Mosenthal, M.D.; (973) 972-6398: A maximum of two (2) Mandatory/Elective (combined) positions per rotation can be accommodated. (Priority to 4th-year Mandatory AI).

SICU (VA) Charles Tischler, M.D.; (973) 676-1000 ext. 1210: One (1) Mandatory/Elective (combined) position per rotation can be accommodated. (Priority to 4th-year Mandatory AI).

After initial orientation the student will be assigned to a team with responsibilities equivalent to those of a first-year resident. He/she will attend all conferences and present cases as well as be responsible for history and physical examinations and assisting at operations.

All students applying for electives must be within these limits. All electives in Surgery depend on availability after mandatory AI assignments. Electives taken at affiliates must meet academic requirements for the AI, but will not count as the mandatory rotation.

Drs. David Livingston, Asha Bale and Ziad Sifri will submit grades and evaluations for their respective services.

Student evaluation and grades

Students will be evaluated by the surgical or trauma attendings and chief residents. Evaluation is dependent on work ethics, understanding of surgical diseases, ability to plan and carry out diagnostic and treatment plans, and operating technique and skills attained.
