Plastic Surgery
Message from the Chair
Our mission is to train medical school graduates to become independent thinking, academically oriented, skilled plastic surgeons in an environment of supervised graduated responsibilities and commitment to the development of each of the core competencies. The program at New Jersey Medical School-UMDNJ has undergone a major revitalization.
We are currently fully accredited by the ACGME with a 5-year review schedule. The faculty consists of 4 outstanding full time academicians, a large group of excellent clinical faculty and a dedicated nurse practitioner. The residency is a integrated format - structured as a 3 year general surgery experience followed by 3 years of plastic surgery. Included in these first three years are 4 months of plastic surgery rotations and 2 months per year of surgical subspecialities such as orthopedics, ENT, OMFS and ophthalmic plastic surgery. The program prior to 2011 was a combined format program.
Our residents attend the plastic surgery weekly academic conferences throughout their 6 years. They are involved with all of the academic and administrative functions of the division. During the plastic surgery residency, there is a considerable operative caseload with an excellent diversity. The resident clinics are faculty supervised and all residents are welcome to participate in the private offices. Plastic Surgery rotations include the University Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Perhaps the greatest strength of our program is that the residents and faculty work very closely together and there is a tremendous spirit d'corps. The program is also very academically oriented: all residents are required to produce scholarly work on an ongoing basis. We are well represented at local, national, and international conferences. Finally, it is important to note that we are one of the few New York City metropolitan area programs that offer plastic surgery training to graduating medical students.
