| Since knowledge is the most powerful tool we possess as surgeons, the faculty strives to foster an environment in which the basics of surgical science can be learned, enabling our graduates to critically read the surgical literature and keep abreast of surgical advancements years after graduating from the program. To assist with this goal, we have a full-time educational specialist whose primary responsibility is to help residents reach their educational potential. |  |
| Lastly, the Department provides individuals the opportunity
to carry out research in both the clinic and in extramurally funded surgical
research laboratories. These research opportunities prepare our residents
for careers in academic surgery, as well as improve their chances of obtaining
