Surgery

Chairman's Welcome
Edwin A. Deitch, MD

It is my pleasure, as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, to welcome your interest in our surgical training program and to provide a brief overview of our goals.  First and foremost, our goal is to train broad-based surgical specialists who can treat patients with a wide range of surgical diseases.  This is accomplished by having rotations at private and public hospitals, the VA Medical Center as well as University Hospital.  This blend of hospitals exposes our residents to all facets of patient care, while the exposure to a wide range of surgical attendings and practice patterns facilitates realistic career choices.

Since knowledge is the most powerful tool we possess as surgeons, the faculty strives to foster an environment in which the basics of surgical science can be learned, enabling our graduates to critically read the surgical literature and keep abreast of surgical advancements years after graduating from the program. To assist with this goal, we have a full-time educational specialist whose primary responsibility is to help residents reach their educational potential. Edwin A. Deitch, M.D.
Lastly, the Department provides individuals the opportunity to carry out research in both the clinic and in extramurally funded surgical research laboratories.   These research opportunities prepare our residents for careers in academic surgery, as well as improve their chances of obtaining the fellowship of their choice.

In closing, let me wish you the best of luck as you embark on your surgical career.
