Project H.I.G.H. (Humanism Is Good Health)
Lack of literacy is a major contributor to disparities across the nation. In particular, limited health literacy accounts for significant economic and social disparities in our society. Health Literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” (US Department of Health and Human Services, Healthy People 2010).
Many health issues can be prevented or controlled with adequate knowledge and understanding. In an effort to increase our community’s understanding of common health problems, we at New Jersey Medical School in collaboration with the Humanism Center, have started Project H.I.G.H. (Humanism is Good Health) in which we develop health education material that explains complex health topics in a simplified and easy-to-understand format.
Our goal with this project is to empower individuals in our community to take charge of their own health. These pamphlets provide a foundation for specific health topics through explanation of important terminology, general pathology of disease, normal and abnormal results, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and common tips to help prevent or control disease.
On our website, you will find pamphlets in PDF format. They only require double-sided printing and tri-folding. The pamphlets are available in English and Spanish. The information is also available in Powerpoint format for use in presentations.
Our efforts are ongoing and we would appreciate any feedback to improve our work. Please email njmsprojecthigh@gmail.com for any suggestions or questions.
~Knowledge is empowerment. Empowerment is freedom. Freedom is dignity. Dignity is Humanism.~
