How much does it cost to participate in the program? Participation in the program is free. All of your books and reading material will be provided at no cost.
How is the stipend distributed? You will receive a stipend which will be divided in two installments: ½ at the second week and the final installment at the end of the program. Please plan to bring spending money for meals, snacks, and extracurricular activities.
Are scholars reimbursed for their travel costs? There is no travel assistance available.
Where will the scholars be housed? Scholars will stay on campus in NJMS student housing.
When does the program start? The 2012 start date for SMDEP at UMDNJ has yet to be set.
Program Schedule
The SMDEP is a very intense and rigorous program. All classes will begin at 8:30 AM and end at 5:00 PM. Please see the sample schedule.
How are the science courses selected? Students are tracked based upon the courses listed on your academic transcript and/or the grade you received in a particular course. For example: if a scholar has taken “organic chemistry” and received a grade of “C” or lower, the scholar will be tracked into “organic chemistry”. Thus allowing the scholar the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the course material and increase their score when taking the MCATS.
How do the scholars travel between Rutgers-Newark and the UMDNJ Newark campus? Transportation between the Rutgers University Square Apartments and the NJMS Newark campus is provided. Scholars can catch the Rutgers Chen Shuttle in front of Conklin Hall located on University Avenue between the hours of 7:30 am – 8:30 am in the morning and from 4:30 pm-6:00 pm in front of the medical school. Shuttle service runs Monday through Friday up until 10:00 pm.
What should I wear? All scholars will be expected to have a neat appearance suitable for professional environment. Due to the air conditioning, the classrooms are sometimes cool, please make sure you bring with you a jacket or sweater.
Does UMDNJ offer health insurance coverage to participants? NJMS/NJDS does not offer personal health insurance coverage to SMDEP participants. Although it is not mandatory that all participants are insured, we strongly urge that you obtain at least major medical coverage for the duration of the program. In case of an emergency, students will be taken to the nearest hospital.
