SMDEP - Summer Medical and Dental Education Program

SMDEP at UMDNJ is one of twelve national programs funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered through the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Dental Education Association.

The SMDEP is a free (full tuition, housing, and meals) six-week summer medical and dental school academic enrichment program that offers highly motivated rising freshman and sophomore college students intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation.

UMDNJ's mission is the pursuit of excellence in the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and continuing education of health professionals and scientists. Through biomedical, psychosocial, clinical and public health research; promotion of disease and prevention; and the delivery of quality health care, UMDNJ seeks to meet the needs of its diverse populations and improve their health and quality of life.

The New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and the New Jersey Dental School (NJDS) are two of eight health professions schools under the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the nation's largest public university of the health sciences. More..

Since 2001, a total of 477 students have participated in the program. To date:

132 currently enrolled in medical school
28 currently enrolled at NJMS
60 enrolled in other health professions
16 currently pursuing careers outside of the health professions
