AMWA is an organization dedicated to both spreading information about women's health issues and furthering women in medicine. The Arts Club was created with the realization that many medical students have previous experiences in the arts and creative talents which often go unnoticed in their medical school years. Ballroom Dance

The Ballroom Dance Interest Group holds meetings where members learn the basic steps to tango, foxtrot, waltz, swing, cha-cha, rumba, samba, salsa, and merengue. Interested members are able to perform a dance routine they have learned at the meetings for the follies show in the spring. Last year, the group performed a tango and a swing combination routine. For those not interested in performance, it is still a great place to learn some steps to use at a wedding or at a club.

The Rush Surgical Society is an organization that fosters student interest in general surgery and surgical sub-specialties. Dance at NJMS

Free student run dance class given every Wednesday at 5pm in the Grand Foyer. We start with stretching, move on to a cardio workout, do some technique, then end with a funky dance. Performance opportunities are available, but optional. All are welcome to attend at any time!

Early Start Peer Mentoring Program

The Early Start Mentoring Program is a community outreach project of New Jersey Medical School, which sends trained mentors into Newark elementary schools to promote positive social behavior and non-aggressive conflict resolution. Our focus is to develop self-esteem and social problem solving skills, while offering a caring and supportive outlet for the students involved.

Then maybe the Jewish Medical Society (JMS), a Non-Denominational group, is for you. JMS is a group that wishes to educate the general UMDNJ community on Judiasm and Jewish practice; especially Jewish practice as it relates to healthcare. JMS plans on holding numerous events this year such as bone marrow registries, healthfairs and a lecture series on Jewish Law.

LGBTPM - Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender People in Medicine

LGBTPM seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment for LGBT medical students, to advocate for the inclusion of LGBT issues in medical education, and to break down the prejudices and misconceptions concerning LGBT people that act as a barrier to education and patient care.

Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) is dedicated to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive healthcare choices. MSFC recognizes that one the greatest obstacles to safe and legal abortion is the absence of trained providers. As medical students, we work to make reproductive health care, including abortion, a part of standard medical education and residency training.

The New Moms Program is a prenatal advocacy program in which first and second year medical students are paired with young, expectant mothers in their first trimester of pregnancy. Students serve as a support system for their patients during prenatal visits and share in the birthing experience. NJMS Golf Club

The New Jersey Medical School Golf Club, established in 2003, unites all medical students interested in golf. We are officially recognized by the United States Golf Association and the New Jersey State Golf Association. Our purpose is to foster golf outings, sponsor an annual tournament,
establish handicaps for players, and promote golf in our community.

This group addresses topics of interest to the increasing number of students who did not follow the "traditional" pathway to medical school. Events are geared toward students who were non-science majors in college, took time off after college to work or pursue other endeavors, or have spouses/significant others and/or children. Project Pediatrics (Boarder Babies)

Our program involves playing, tutoring, and organizing events for the pediatric inpatients in our hospital. This volunteer work is a great way to unwind, have fun, and act like a kid during stressful times, including while studying anatomy. (Don’t worry, the kids don’t mind the smell! Jk) We also run Boarder Babies, a program run by medical students by which babies waiting for their parents or to be put in a home can experience human contact.

Reach Out and Read

Reach out and Read is a tangible means of educating and caring for the youth of Newark. Through direct contact with young patients and their families, ROR participants are allowed the privilege of access into young lives, and the joy of sharing stories and lessons from the rich tradition of children's literature.

STATS is an outreach program in which 1st and 2nd year medical students lead HIV education and prevention workshops in local middle and high school classrooms, health fairs and within the UMDNJ community. Unite for Sight is a chapter of a national organization which aims to help eliminate preventable eye disease through vision screening and education.
