Student Council
The NJMS Student Council is a student-run organization which focuses on both
academic and social concerns of NJMS students. The Council is composed of 24
students (6 student representatives from each class, elected by their classmates
on an annual basis). Officers are elected annually from among these 24 representatives.
These officers are president, vice president, program director, treasurer, secretary
and fundraising chair. These officers, along with one member-at-large representative
from each class, form the Executive Committee. The Student Council serves the
following functions:
- Discussion of Student Topics
The Student Council meets monthly during the academic year to review all Student
Council business, disseminate information to class representatives, provide
a forum for discussing student-related topics and maintain the Student Council
budget, which is funded by the NJMS student activities fee. Meetings are open
to all students, faculty and administration. Elected class representatives
are responsible for representing the interests of their classmates and informing
them of all school business.
- Programming
All activities funded by the Student Council are coordinated by the program
director, often with the help of the "Lounge Lord" (Usually a second-year
student who is responsible for the upkeep and improvement of the medical student
lounge). Events typically include the Circle Line Harbor Cruise, Halloween
Lounge Social, the Follies, the Golden Apple Awards Dinner Dance and monthly
Lounge Socials. Other services provided by the programming department with
the assistance of the Fundraising Chairs or the Athletics Director include
Club Med (the medical student lounge), old exam sales, instrument/coat/scrub
sales and intramural athletics (aerobics, softball, flag football, hockey,
volleyball and basketball).
- The Plexus
The Student Council selects editors and oversees the production of the school
newspaper, The Plexus, which is funded by the Council. The newspaper
includes information on social events, creative writing and student news.
- Fund and Coordinate Clubs and Organizations
All on-campus clubs and organizations are funded by Student Council and run
by medical students. These clubs coordinate scheduling of events through the
program director; submit monthly reports of their activities and report to
the vice president; and sponsor events that are open to all students. Click
here for student descriptions of clubs and organizations.
- Student Representation on NJMS Administrative Committees
The Appointments Committee of Student Council appoints first-year medical
students to four-year representative positions to the standing NJMS committees.
These positions give students the opportunity to serve special interests.
Student representatives are considered full and equal voting members of these
committees, which also include faculty and administration. These committees
include Faculty Council, Academic Programs and Policies Committee, Student
Affairs Committee, Admissions Committee, Alumni Committee, Board of Concerned
Citizens, Convocation Committee, Student Assistance Program and Library Committee.
Student representatives report to Student Council both by written reports
and meeting attendance.
