Dr. Ryden Retires from CMR |
The former CMR Director began her career at NJMS in 1995. During her tenure at the institution, Dr. Ryden helped to transform CMR, formerly known as the Research Animal Facility, from a small department into one that today oversees four research animal facilities. Dr. William Gause, Senior Associate Dean for Research, lauded Dr. Ryden's work and her dedication to NJMS. "I have rarely seen an individual as committed and motivated as Dr. Eva Ryden," Dr. Gause said. "She has played an essential and leading role in the development of effective research animal facilities at our institution during the last decade." Dr. Ryden received her Ph.D. in 1986 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1988. After completing a three-year Laboratory Animal residency at MIT, Division of Comparative Medicine, Dr. Ryden worked as a clinical veterinarian at the University of Michigan and at Thomas Jefferson University . Dr. Ryden expressed her gratitude for the support she received while working at NJMS. "Being a Laboratory Animal Veterinarian has been an exciting and fulfilling career," Dr. Ryden said. "I have especially enjoyed and have been stimulated by the friendly and supportive environment here at the UMDNJ Newark campus and benefited by interactions with faculty and staff, many of different cultural backgrounds." Dr. Bruce Scharf, DVM, DACLAM, has replaced Dr. Ryden as Director of CMR. "I'm pleased to be able to hand over the directorship of CMR to Dr. Scharf and feel confident that he will take the department through its next phase of expansion," Dr. Ryden said. But retirement for Dr. Ryden doesn't mean relaxing entirely. "I'm looking forward to spending more time with my children and grandchildren. I'm planning on doing some consulting and teaching as well."
