The Star-Ledger Features New Moms Program

Dr. Theodore Barrett, an Assistant Professor at NJMS, and several medical students were highlighted in a Star-Ledger article on The New Moms Program at NJMS, a student-run initiative that is part of the Student Health Advocacy for Resources and Education (S.H.A.R.E) organization.

Dr. Barrett is also the Medical Director of the New Moms Program that is located in University Hospital 's out-patient practice, University OB/GYN Associates. The program was established to improve health outcomes in teenage expectant mothers and their babies. Every Tuesday Sarahjane Rath, a health educator at UH, facilitates an educational session that is designed to help the teens learn about the stages of pregnancy.

Through this program, medical student volunteers have an opportunity to conduct presentations. They also become part of the social and emotional support system for the expectant teenagers who visit UH's OB/GYN clinic. When possible, the students attend pre-natal appointments with the expectant mothers and they are present in the Labor and Delivery ward during childbirth. The medical students act as advocates, coaches and sources of support for the expectant mothers.
