Columbia Foundation Supports Students

Since 1995, select New Jersey Medical School students of Italian-American ancestry have received scholarship support from the Columbia Foundation. Established in 1914 by business and professional men of Italian descent, the Clifton-based foundation each year provides scholarships to second or third year students of promise at NJMS.

This year, Columbia Foundation President Joseph D'Errico and Scholarship Committee Chairman Benjamin Del Vento presented a check for $16,000 to UMDNJ President Dr. Bruce Vladeck, UMDNJ Foundation Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. George Heinrich, NJMS Interim Dean Dr. Robert Johnson and NJMS Alumni Association President Dr. Joseph DiTrolio during a reception on Tuesday, November 21 in the Bergen Building .

Dr. Johnson thanked the Columbia Foundation for its steadfast support of New Jersey Medical School students as they pursue their dreams to become physicians.

"The reality is that this dream is an expensive one, with debt burdens reaching $100,000 upon graduation," said Dr. Johnson. "Thanks to the Columbia Foundation's support, students can focus on their dream instead of their debt."

Since 1995, the Columbia Foundation has provided NJMS students with $124,000 in support. This year five students received Columbia Foundation scholarships: Cathy Cerullo, Sean Ciullo, Scott Cutro, Magdalena Filardo and Stephen Marshall.
