Safety First

In conjunction with the UMDNJ Department of Public Safety, NJMS has enhanced the communication channels for the dissemination of emerging public safety updates.

Future serious crime alerts will be communicated to the NJMS community via e-mail with the request to share the information with those who do not have access to e-mail.

The student web site, http://catalyst.umdnj.edu/, now includes a prominent link to the Public Safety web site.

In addition, flyers will be posted to bulletin boards throughout the medical school, hospital and residence halls.

These efforts augment already existing communication vehicles which include:

  • a Police Alert channel on the My UMDNJ intranet site, which all members of the NJMS community are encouraged to visit regularly;
  • a news channel on the home page of the Department of Public Safety: http://www.umdnj.edu/opsweb/
  • and the posting of annual security data, prepared in compliance with the Clery Act, to inform UMDNJ's faculty, staff, students, and applicants about criminal activity occurring on campus and on contiguous property, which is located here: http://www.umdnj.edu/opsweb/annual_report/index.htm

In investigating how to best strengthen our communication efforts in this area, we researched best practices from other academic institutions located in urban areas including Temple University in Philadelphia, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, Barnard College in New York, Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-New Brunswick.
