Psychiatrist Provides "Shock" Value | ||||||||||||||
Charles Kellner, MD, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at New Jersey Medical School, and an expert in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), is featured in the just-released book "Shock" by Kitty Dukakis and Larry Tye. Dr. Kellner was interviewed for the book about a year ago. In addition to being quoted, a number of his published research articles are featured in the bibliography. Dr. Kellner believes the book has done a good job in allaying a lot of the fear associated with this treatment. His latest research from 2005 and 2006 supports th'e continued efficacy and use of shock therapy, particularly for people with medication-resistant depression. According to Dr. Kellner, since its introduction in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has remained an important treatment for selected serious neuro-psychiatric illnesses and continues to be one of the most effective treatments in psychiatry. ECT has evolved into a technically sophisticated procedure with a proven track record of safety. New Jersey Medical School is the only academic research center in the state where research in ECT is being conducted. |
