Photography Exhibit in Medical Science Building Depicts the Newark Riots |
The New Jersey Medical School is proud to feature the works of photographer Benedict Joseph Fernandez, III, in an exhibit entitled, "Civil Disorder." The photos are currently on display in an exhibit case located in the Medical Science Building near lecture hall B-552. The exhibit will run through May 30th. Fernandez, a native New Yorker, is a former chair of the Parsons School of Design/ New School in the Photography Department where he worked for 22 years. His visual art is a compilation that provides insight into both historical and social issues. In addition to the photos on display, Fernandez is known his historical work which includes, inner-city children; New York's Hispanic community; the protest movement of the 60's; a dramatic photo essay on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a series on bikers and a documentary on China. His work is in permanent collections in museums world wide: The Smithsonian, The National Portrait Gallery, The Corcoran Museum of Art Museum of Modern Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, The Norton Simon Museum of Art, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture among other arts and cultural institutions.
