Name: James J. Dermody, PhD
Title: Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology
and Molecular Genetics, Director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory
Background: Jim
Dermody graduated in 1973 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
with a B.S. in Biology and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Biochemistry
from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1980. He
did his post-doctoral training with Dr. Harvey Ozer at Hunter College,
New York.
Dr. Dermody joined the faculty of
the New Jersey Medical School, Department of Microbiology and Molecular
Genetics in 1989, first, as a Visiting Assistant Professor and then
in 1992 became an Assistant Professor. He was appointed Director
of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory of the Center for Human and
Molecular Genetics in 1993.
Professional Interests and
Activities: Dr. Dermody's major areas of interest are
the molecular genetics of human disease; DNA microarray analysis
for mutation detection and gene expression
profiles. He teaches genetics to the first year medical students
at UMDNJ - NJ Medical School and also serves on the Institutional
Review Board.
