Spanish Translation of English Terms 1997 THIRD EDITION This glossary is written to assist genetic counselors and medical personnel in communicating with Spanish-speaking patients. It is necessary that the person providing information to the patient be bilingual and knowledgeable of the patient's culture. Genetic counselors and interpreters selected the terms due to their frequent use in genetic counseling sessions. The definitions provided are specific for this type of counseling with the often complex ideas presented as simply as possible. The definitions may require additional explanations depending on the patient's needs. Some words are not defined because they are basic or common knowledge. This third edition (46 pages) includes more terms relating to molecular testing and other advances in genetics since 1990. The newly added sections "Family Terms/Relationships" and "Parts of the Body" are included to assist in pedigree and anatomical terminology. The development of this glossary was made possible by grants from Maternal and Child Health-Department of Health and Human Services, Project (MCJ 341006-03) and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation - North Jersey Chapter.
