IGM is the successor of the UMDNJ-NJMS Center for Human and Molecular Genetics (founded in 1990) and the PHRI Center for Applied Genomic (founded in 2000). Our current staff of approximately 50 includes: 

• 12 faculty, four board-certified clinical geneticists, six board-certified genetic counselors, one health educator, two social workers and two registered dietitians

We are committed to enabling translational research and personalized medicine through biomarker discovery, clinical development and commercialization. To this end, the IGM functions as an academic contract research organization (CRO) dedicated to biomarker discovery and the clinical evaluation of biomarkers.  As a CRO, we operate CLIA certified CAP accredited research and diagnostic laboratories and have substantial access to patients through the UMDNJ University Hospital, Behavioral Science Center and affiliated hospitals throughout northern New Jersey. The patient population has exceptional ethnic diversity. Our staff of physicians, clinical geneticists and genetic counselors has extensive experience in patient care and education.

Genetic discovery research infrastructure

• Over $1.5 million of microarray and other equipment for genomic research (expression profiling and genotyping)

Clinical biomarker validation & diagnostic test development

• Over $1.5 million of specialized clinical lab and FDA-approved instrumentation

Clinical lab testing services for New Jersey hospitals through three CLIA-certified clinical reference labs (also certified by the College of American Pathology )

Genetic counseling, newborn screening and outreach services to New Jersey hospitals

• Provide evaluation and patient information for prenatal and postnatal diagnosis in pediatrics and obstetrics and adult onset disorders including heritable forms of cancer
• Support specialty clinics for neurofibromatosis, autism, cranial facial disorders, sickle cell disease, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy

Offering clinical development of diagnostic biomarkers discovered by UMDNJ, Rutgers and Princeton University faculty in our CLIA-certified labs

Providing biomarker discovery and development services to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies

• 5300 sq. ft. clinical laboratory and office space on F level at the Medical Sciences Building
• 3300 sq ft research & development lab and office space at the International Center for Public Health building
• 2500 sq. ft. of office space in the Doctors Office Clinic housing the genetic counseling service and newborn screening programs
