The University Regional Metabolic Treatment Center is comprised of a multidisciplinary team for the comprehensive and coordinated care of individuals with inborn errors of metabolism. The center is partially grant funded by the State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services - Newborn Screening Program. Newborns are referred to this center for confirmatory diagnosis and follow up care. Those babies who are confirmed positive for a metabolic disorder are provided with ongoing services. Children, adolescents, and adults are included in family-centered services, which include specialized medical care, psychosocial support, education and collaboration with primary health care providers and community agencies. The multidisciplinary team includes: metabolic geneticists, PKU specialists, certified metabolic dietitians, certified genetic counselor, licensed clinical social worker and metabolic formula coordinator.

The staff of the Division of Prenatal Diagnosis has special training and interest in the diagnosis and management of high risk pregnancies. Services include amniocentesis, alpha-fetoprotein tests, chromosomal analysis for congenital malformations, and detailed ultrasonography and color Doppler flow studies to identify fetal anomalies. A genetic scan is available for those patients who decline genetic amniocentesis. The personnel of the Center for Human and Molecular Genetics form part of the multi-disciplinary perinatology team.

The Neurofibromatosis Center of New Jersey serves both children and adults with the diagnosis or possible diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. Both genetic and neurologic services are provided on site with many other subspecialty services such as orthopedics, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology, plastic surgery and head and neck surgery available as needed. Patients with other neurogenetic disorders such as von Hippel-Lindau, spinal cerebellar ataxia or Charcot-Marie-Tooth may also be seen in this center.

The Muscular Dystrophy Clinic at the Doctor's Office Center services individuals with over 40 different types of neuromuscular diseases. Supported by the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Clinic provides comprehensive medical care, orthopedic aids and social services. Patients are seen in the Clinic by several specialists, including neurologists, physical medicine specialists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and psychologists. A genetic counselor attends the Clinic on a regular basis to discuss genetic issues and respond to patients' questions regarding the inheritance of their problems. No one is turned away for inability to pay for services.

The University Craniofacial Center of New Jersey is a multidisciplinary comprehensive care team dedicated to the treatment and management of children and adults with clefts, ear malformations and complex craniofacial anomalies such as craniosynostoses. Patients are seen by a variety of specialists on a single day and available services include: audiology, speech and language, behavioral psychology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, otology and genetics.

The Living Well with Sickle Cell Program

The pediatric sickle cell program offers comprehensive care for children with a variety of sickling disorders. In addition to a stroke prevention program and an evening transfusion program, there are a host of specialty services such as nutrition, social work and health educators. Children are able to participate in age appropriate support groups, enjoy a comfortable "kid friendly" environment as well as use the VCRs, play video games and interact with the dedicated child life specialists and play therapists.
