Program Overview and Mission Statement
The Program in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics offers exceptional research opportunities in molecular genetic studies of a wide spectrum of topics, including chromosome replication, segregation, and repair, gene expression, cell signaling and cancer, as well as studies aimed at characterizing the interaction between host and microbial pathogens that cause malaria, AIDS, TB, Lyme Disease, etc. The Program also offers rigorous and broad training in the fields of molecular genetics and microbial pathogenesis through a series of courses, minicourses, and presentations that emphasize discussion of the original literature. This combination has ensured that our students are fully prepared to embark on careers in research (basic, biomedical, biotech), education, and science administration.
Research interests:
• viral, bacterial, and parasite pathogenesis
• immunological response to bacterial, viral, and parasite infections
• molecular genetics of gene expression and mRNA processing
• chromosome replication, recombination, repair, and segregation
• cell signaling, growth and tumorigenesis
