Viruses, Cells and Disease (BIOC5125Q)

Course Structure:
The course will be divided into 3 parts:
Part I Basic Concepts in Virus Structure and Replication (3 sessions)
Part II Cell Defenses: Innate and Acquired Immunity (3 sessions)
Part III Special Topics in Virus – Cell Interactions (9 sessions)
Each session (after the first) will be half didactic, and half based on discussion or presentation of papers by students. Concepts will be introduced by the lecturer one week and related research papers or review articles will be discussed the next week.
Assessment: 25%, student participation and presentations; 36%, in-class exam, short answers to questions (1/lecture) from Parts I and II; 39%, take-home exam, 1000-1500 word answer to one of 3 or 4 questions suggested by Part III lecturers.
