Viruses, Cells and Disease (BIOC5125Q)
Welcome to the Viruses, Cells and Disease course website (BIOC5125Q).
This course is for students interested in viruses as fascinating biological entities, as sophisticated probes of cell function, and as agents of disease.
The goal of the course is to provide you with an introduction to virus structure and function, and to the physiological responses to virus infection. Emphasis is placed on viruses infecting humans and on virus-cell interactions at the molecular and cellular level.
How the course is organized
The course is both didactic and interactive, with student participation encouraged.
Course lecturers are specialists in the various viruses, host responses, and diseases that will be presented in the course. Each lecturer will outline the fundamentals of his or her topic (such as herpesviruses or immune defenses), then assign readings in a select area within this topic (e.g., gene therapy, RNA interference, AIDS) for subsequent discussion in class.
Goals of the course
At the end of the course you will have an insight into the world of virus-host interactions:
The course is primarily aimed at PhD level graduate students and other students with a suitable background in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
