Kai A. Bickenback, MD.

NJMS welcomes Dr. Kai A. Bickenbach who recently joined the UMDNJ family as a full time attending physician at University Hospital and NJMS faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology. His practice will focus primarily on gastrointestinal (GI) oncology and endocrine surgery with specific interests in esophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, peritoneal, and colorectal malignancies. His research interests are focused clinical outcomes and biomarkers related to pancreatic and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Dr. Bickenbach was born in London, England. His family moved to the United States while he was young and he eventually attended University of Michigan where he majored in Cellular Molecular Biology and graduated Cum Laude. After graduating, he enrolled in medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. After completing medical school, he pursued his general surgery residency at University of Chicago. During this time he became interested in the medical and surgical management of cancer patients. This led him to pursue a research fellowship for two years during his residency in which he studied the use of viral vectors in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors under the guidance of Dr. Ralph Weichselbaum. He was awarded the Charles B. Huggins Annual Basic Science Research Award. Additionally, he was awarded the University of Chicago Surgical Society Travel Award which allowed him to study oncologic surgery in Santiago, Chile for one month.

Following his residency, Dr. Bickenbach completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. During this fellowship he received advanced training in surgical oncology including liver, biliary tract and pancreatic cancer treatment. Additionally, he received advanced training in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. While at Memorial, he developed several research and clinical projects focused on pancreatic, gastric and metastatic colorectal cancer. This research resulted in several presentations at national meetings and multiple peer reviewed publications.

Dr. Bickenbach is ready to build his surgical oncology practice at University Hospital and pursue his research interests at NJMS.
