The University Hospital UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School


Registration is now open for those who would like to take part in the upcoming sessions of Literature and Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare, a national award-winning reading program for health care professionals. The program is a collaborative effort between the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, Creative Arts Healthcare.-The University Hospital, and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.

The scholar facilitator for the 2012 Literature and Medicine is Suzanne McConnell, Writer, Fiction Editor of the Bellevue Literary Review, and Adjunct Professor of English, Hunter College.

The Program is open to the entire UMDNJ community. FREE BOOKS and evening refreshments will be provided. Enrollment is, however, limited to 20 participants. Both new and prior participants are welcome to register. Participants are asked to ensure that they can commit to attending all six sessions before registering. Anyone who misses two sessions will lose his or her spot to someone on the waiting list.

The 2012 Literature and Medicine sessions will be held in the Student Affairs Conference Room, MSB-C654b on the following Wednesday evenings from 5:30PM - 7:30PM:

Dr. Karlene Williams

 

NJMS welcomes Dr. Karlene Williams who recently joined the UMDNJ as a full time attending in the Department of Medicine at The University Hospital and faculty member of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Community Programs. Dr Williams will focus her practice in acute-care medicine as a Hospitalist at UH. Dr. Williams obtained her undergraduate degree at City University of New York and went on to complete her medical education in 1998 from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C.


Her post-graduate training was completed at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Williams completed a Medicine/Pediatrics residency in 2002 and went on to serve as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine until 2003. After practicing for several years, Dr. Williams completed a Mini- Fellowship in Geriatrics for the Non-Geriatrician at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.


Dr. Williams is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. She is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Prior to joining our staff, Dr. Williams was an Assistant Attending at Harlem Hospital Medical Center and later served as a Physician Specialist, providing comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. She has contributed to several peer-reviewed journal articles and has been an active lecturer to medical students and residents particularly related to geriatric care.


Dr. Williams resides in New Jersey with her family and has quickly assimilated to the Hospitalist group and embraced her patient care responsibilities at UH. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Williams as part of our UMDNJ family!
