Registration is now open for those who would like to take part in the upcoming sessions of Literature and Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare, a national award-winning reading program for health care professionals. The program is a collaborative effort between the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, Creative Arts Healthcare.-The University Hospital, and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.
The scholar facilitator for the 2012 Literature and Medicine is Suzanne McConnell, Writer, Fiction Editor of the Bellevue Literary Review, and Adjunct Professor of English, Hunter College.

The Program is open to the entire UMDNJ community. FREE BOOKS and evening refreshments will be provided. Enrollment is, however, limited to 20 participants. Both new and prior participants are welcome to register. Participants are asked to ensure that they can commit to attending all six sessions before registering. Anyone who misses two sessions will lose his or her spot to someone on the waiting list.
The 2012 Literature and Medicine sessions will be held in the Student Affairs Conference Room, MSB-C654b on the following Wednesday evenings from 5:30PM - 7:30PM:

NJMS Welcomes Dr. Bickenback Dr. Kai A. Bickenbach recently joined the UMDNJ family as a full time attending physician at University Hospital and NJMS faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology. His practice will focus primarily on gastrointestinal (GI) oncology and endocrine surgery with specific interests in esophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, peritoneal, and colorectal malignancies. |

Splice Now or Splice Later Sanjay Tyagi, Ph.D., and colleagues at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School used a clever new imaging technique to follow the fate of individual RNA molecules inside the cell. RNAs that follow the usual splicing rules were spliced co-transcriptionally. |

Titanium Joint Debris May Trigger Painful Inflammation William Gause, PhD (pictured left), Senior Associate Dean of Research and Director of the Center of Immunology and Inflammation at the NJMS Department of Medicine, Joseph Benevenia MD, Acting Director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at NJMS, and UMDNJ researchers have discovered that titanium in artificial joints may cause inflammation.

"Heart-Breaking" Starvation Response
Junichi Sadoshima, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-New Jersey Medical School have discovered that two proteins, called PPAR-alpha and Sirt1, are induced by starvation in mice and turn off the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial function and heart contraction. |

NJMS Welcomes Dr. Williams Dr. Karlene Williams recently joined the UMDNJ as a full time attending in the Department of Medicine at The University Hospital and faculty member of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Community Programs. Mapping MRSA's Family TreeCheck into a hospital and you run the risk of infection with a methicillin-resistant strain of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. But present day MRSA might have been worse if it had descended directly from a 1950s version of the bug, according to a study co-authored by Barry N. Kreiswirth, PhD, a professor at the Public Health Research Institute of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. |

The Healthcare Foundation Center at NJMS, the Student Health Advocates for Resources and Education (S.H.A.R.E) Program and the Office of Special Programs, are co-sponsoring a clothing and diaper drive that will benefit the Apostles’ House, a community organization that provides social services to homeless as well as at-risk families and individuals in the Newark area. Donations of disposable diapers, children's clothing, pajamas, socks, hats, and underwear will be accepted through the end of the year and can be placed in bins specially made by NJMS students and staff at the following locations: The Center for Humanism, MSB-C698, The Office of Special Programs, MSB-B624, Laboratory Education, MSB-B517 and the ICPH Building (in the lobby). UMDNJ and New Jersey Blood Services, a division of the New York Blood Center, recently hosted a blood drive at NJMS where nearly 100 students, faculty, and staff made blood donations. According to Christine Schetelich, of the New York Blood Center, these donations have the potential to save approximately 220 lives. From left to right New Jersey Blood Services donor specialists Carl Bernardo, Juan Escobar, Ronald Mortellito, Robert Ecker, Emmanuel Michel, Nellie Bulandoz, and Nor Averion were on hand during the latest blood drive held at NJMS.
