A new fraudulent email is being circulated.
This email appears to be a legitimate message from Microsoft containing links to updates for Outlook and Outlook Express. Some of the links in the message are to actual Microsoft websites, the critical update URL leads the user to a Trojan virus.
Microsoft does not send out software update notification emails.
If you receive a message that appears to be from Microsoft requesting that you update your computer, DELETE THE MESSAGE.
Details of the fraudulent message are below, including a screen shot of the message.
Close to the weekend, our AV vendor - Trend Micro - identified spam (click Figure 1 thumbnail for larger view) claiming to be a Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express critical update that "offers the highest levels of stability and security."
A tricky difference here is that all the links in the email (the links to Contact Us, Privacy Statement, Trademarks, and Terms of Use) are legitimate-except one. The URL where the "critical update" may be downloaded looks legitimate, but hovering over the hyperlink (or checking the source code of the mail) reveals a totally different destination.

Planned portal upgrade this coming weekend. Please be advised that my.umdnj.edu will be unavailable for the entire period of time from 5 pm on June 5 until start of business on June 8.

cancellation of lasts night's outage, the Saturday outage time frame
has to be extended.

The Newark, Piscataway and New Brunswick Campuses and all remote sites
in the Northern and Central regions will be migrated to the new back-
bone. WAN, Internet, I-2 and NJEDge.net connectivity will be unavailable
during this time frame. Stratford, Camden and the Southern region remote
sites will not have access to the Internet, NJEDge, nor Internet-2
during this time frame, however WAN connectivity will remain in-tact.
Saturday, May 23rd between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 PM.
The Stratford and Camden Campuses and all remote sites in the Southern
region will be migrated to the new back- bone. WAN, Internet, I-2 and
NJEDge.net connectivity will be unavailable during this time frame.
May 8, 2009
NJEDge.net is planning to change their service provider due to the expiration of their current contract. The new service providers will provide value added services to NJEDge.net and their members.
In order to accomplish this, NJEDge must migrate all of their members' connections and their entire backbone to the new service providers.
Despite my efforts, NJEDge was unable to schedule the downtime during our pre-defined window, due to the complexity of this migration and their requirement of vendor support.
The following planned down times will be required:
Wednesday, May 20th between the hours of 6:00 and 7:00 PM.
The Stratford and Camden Campuses and all remote sites in the Southern region will be migrated to the new back- bone. WAN, Internet, I-2 and NJEDge.net connectivity will be unavailable during this time frame.

bone. WAN, Internet, I-2 and NJEDge.net connectivity will be unavailable

A new email phising attempt requesting personal information has been
identified. The subject of the email is "Umdnj Webmail Update". Phishing
is an online scam used to commit identity theft. A fraudulent, but
official-looking e-mail is sent to a user in an attempt to con that user
into divulging personal and/or private information, which is then used
for identity theft. If you are a recipient of an email asking for your

Due to a change in technology, Verizon has scheduled the replacement and upgrade of the Newark Centrex voice mail system. This system uses 2-3400 as the main access number. Verizon will migrate the Newark Campus voice mail boxes that are currently on the 2-3400 system to a new platform, National Unified Messaging System, (NUMS).
Beginning March 17, 2009
Affected Areas: All voice mail users who dial 2-3400 or (973)-972-3400 on the Newark Campus to gain voice mail access.
Impact: The 2-3400 access number is being replaced with a new access number 1-877-584-9321
Customers will be required to perform the following:
- Dial 1-877-584-9321 to gain access to their voice mail
- Retrieve all messages from the 2-3400 system prior to March 17, 2009
- Set up and initialize their new voice mailbox after February 27, 2009 and prior to March 17, 2009
All mailboxes will be migrated on March 17, 2009. Access to 2-3400 and all voice messages therein will be unavailable after March 31, 2009. As such, voice mail messages must be retrieved from the 2-3400 system by March 31, 2009.
Please visit www.umdnj.edu/istweb to obtain instructions on how to access the new voice mail system and set up your new voice mailbox. Additionally, voice mail messages will be broadcast to all affected voice mailboxes indicating this change.
Telephones using speed dials to gain voice mail access will need to be reprogrammed to dial the new voice mail access number. This can be requested by calling the IST Service Center @ 732-743-3200 or instructions can be found on www.umdnj.edu/istweb.
IST will be setting up a command center through the IST Service Center, which will be staffed by customer service representatives to assist with issue resolution in the event that problems arise during the conversion.
To report any issues between March 17th and March 20th, please contact the command center @ x-3-3200 or 732-743-3200 and press option 6. Support will be available between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. Standard support procedures will resume on March 23, 2009.

Dental School Bradford Campus Manager Upgrade Summary
The purpose of the Bradford upgrade, which has been tentatively scheduled for the weekend of January 2-4, 2009, is to address the current instability of the system that provides network access control for devices that connect to the Dental School Bradford Campus Manager cluster. Affected areas are New Jersey Dental School, ICPH, ADMC, BHSB, Broadway House, CHEN, Maplewood, Overlook, Scotch Plains, and St. James.
The version of Bradford software currently employed within the Dental School Bradford cluster is version 3.17; this will be upgraded to version 4.0.1.50. The new software release includes multiple “bug fixes” that will resolve the problems recently experienced by Dental School users. In addition, process enhancements will simplify the overall system operation by eliminating external functions that were not previously included in the Bradford system and therefore, required access to external applications.
Due to changes in the system and as a result of the upgrade process, several slight variations to the current system operating characteristics may be detected by end users, which are as follows;
- Non-core users that move between buildings may be required to re-register at the new location. This requirement is only expected to last during the upgrade process and will be removed once all of the Bradford Campus Manager Clusters have been upgraded.
- All non-core users will be automatically re- directed to the Campus Manager Authentication logon page, http://nwrrds.umdnj.edu/authentication, when attempting to logon. As such “bookmarking” the new URL is not required.
- Non-core users will no longer be required to logoff at night. Instead, the 12 hour timer function, which is already built into the system, will provide the logoff function. If a user attempts to logoff via the existing logoff page, http://logoff.core.umdnj.edu, they will receive an error message that the page is unavailable. This is because access will be blocked via access control list. In the event that users want to continue to logoff, they should be advised to logoff via the aforementioned logoff page
- The 15 minute timer will be removed. As such, all non-Core devices will be placed on 11.net upon expiration of the 12 hr. timer. Users must authenticate prior to gaining network access.
- New and non-registered devices must register with the new Campus Manager Cluster by visiting, http://nwrrds.umdnj.edu/registration, prior to gaining network access.
- In order to minimize exposure during the course of the upgrade, a “parallel build” will take place. Prior to the upgrade, the “new” Bradford system will have already been configured and tested. This will then be installed in the same location as the existing system. The upgrade process will be limited to synchronization of key files, disabling the old system and enabling the newly upgraded system. In the event that any significant problem cannot be resolved, the process will be reversed to the old system in order to minimize end user impact.
