Please take a few minutes to prepare your laptop for Virtual Microscopy.
The histology laboratory portion of ACE will utilize Virtual Microscopy. This is a computer based technology that eliminates the need for microscopes and slide boxes. Histological specimens that were fixed, sectioned, and stained will be available for viewing on a computer screen.
Step 1
Make sure that you have registered for wireless access. Go to : http://istreg.umdnj.edu
If you need any assistance on configuring your laptop for wireless, please see the following sections on the IT@NJMS web site.
http://njms.umdnj.edu/it@njms/wireless.htm
Step 2
Install the Virtual Microscopy (VM) software.
Please see the following sections on the IT@NJMS web site for assistance on installing the VM software.
Virtual Microscopy Install
Video Installation Tutorials
For Mac Users,
You only need to install the (Java) View option. To initiate the install, just click on View and follow the prompts (allow pop-ups for this site).
For Windows Users,
You should install both the (ActiveX) View and Search options. There is no need to install the launch webslide browser option. To initiate the install, just click on View and Search and follow the prompts (allow pop-ups for this site).
Installing the View option for both operating systems should be straightforward. If you run into an error in installing the Search option, there is a detailed guide on how to address it at: http://njms.umdnj.edu/it@njms/students/Windows7_IssueFAQ.pdf
Accessing Virtual Microscopy
You can access the VM software while on campus at : http://njmsvm.umdnj.edu/ .
This link will allow you to 1st install the necessary software components, and then when done, access the VM electronic slides.
You can also access the VM software while off-campus at :
http://njmstss.umdnj.edu/login
To login please use the username and password that were emailed to you.
Please take care of both the wireless and VM registrations, configurations, and installations now as use of the VM software will start in mid-October. In addition, please contact the IT@NJMS department at njmsts@umdnj.edu with any questions, or if you need assistance, to set up an appointment. The office is located at MSB A level Room A550. Please note, we do not have the staff to handle high volume walk-in traffic, and we will not be able to set up appointments for all who may need it if everyone waits until the last minute.
Thank you,
IT@NJMS / njmsts@umdnj.edu / MSB A550

Capture a Screen Shot on a Mac
* To capture the entire desktop, press Command-Shift-3. The screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop.
* To copy the entire desktop, press Command-Control-Shift-3. The screen shot will be placed on your clipboard for you to paste into another program.
* To capture a portion of the desktop, press Command-Shift-4. A cross-hair cursor will appear and you can click and drag to select the area you wish to capture. When you release the mouse button, the screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop. (The file is saved as PDF in Mac OS 10.3 and earlier.)
* To capture a specific application window, press Command-Shift-4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera, and you can move it around the screen. As you move the cursor over an application window, the window will be highlighted. The entire window does not need to be visible for you to capture it. When you have the cursor over a window you want to capture, just click the mouse button and the screen shot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop. (The file is saved as PDF in Mac OS 10.3 and earlier.)
* Add Control to the two shortcuts above to place the screen shot on the clipboard instead of saving it to the desktop.
