Research Office
Message from the Senior Associate Dean for Research
The New Jersey
Medical School provides an outstanding environment for basic and clinical
biomedical research. World-renowned scientists with expertise ranging
from emerging infectious diseases and immunology to cardiovascular disease
and stroke perform cutting edge research using state-of-the-art equipment.
The acquisition of the Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) in 2006
brought outstanding new faculty into the school, including a number of
world-renowned researchers in pathogenesis and host defense. New
buildings recently constructed include a nine story facility that houses
the New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer Center and new
university housing for staff, students, and fellows. In addition,
the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL), partly funded by the National
Institutes of Health, was recently completed and its state-of-the-art
facilities will be an important center for select agent research.
Core facilities
provide access to the latest technologies including flow cytometry, proteomics
and genomics, and imaging. Substantial growth in the core facilities
has occurred in the last several years. Recent awards of several NIH Shared
Instrumentation Grants have allowed facilities to continue to expand and
meet the needs of the faculty. New cores include the Biostatistics
Core, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, the Flow Cytometry
and Immunology Core and the Center for Genome Informatics.
As the Senior Associate Dean for Research, my goal is to further enhance the basic and clinical research environment at our medical school. In this capacity, my office is committed to:
1) Overseeing the core facilities and ensuring that they continue to provide outstanding service to faculty actively engaged in research and that they stay at the cutting edge in technology and expertise.
2) Fostering interdisciplinary collaborative research, with an emphasis on research that includes both basic and clinical components.
3) Participating in the recruitment of outstanding basic and clinical scientists.
4) Further strengthening of both the graduate and postgraduate research programs as this is really the backbone of a strong research environment.
It is an exciting time to be a part of the New Jersey Medical School research program, as it continues its development into one of the leading biomedical research centers in the country. If you are currently part of this effort I look forward to continuing to work with you. If you are considering joining our institution, I encourage you to contact me, the department chair, or the particular faculty member with whom you plan to work.
