Summer Student Research Program
The
Summer Student Research Program provides a unique eight-week research experience
for New Jersey Medical School 's first and second-year medical students as well
as undergraduate students enrolled in our combined BS/MD seven-year program.
Students participate in biomedical research activities in a laboratory or clinical
setting while developing a close working relationship with a faculty member.
NOTE:
The eight-week program runs from June 8th through July 31st with poster sessions
held the first week in August (dates to be announced).
Many
projects provide either a small stipend or a fellowship; many other projects
are available on a volunteer or work-study basis. A directory of faculty research
projects is available under the student information link above. Students
should contact the faculty mentor directly to discuss, in more detail, the goals
of the project for which they are interested. Faculty will evaluate the candidate's
qualifications to undertake the research proposed; and, with faculty approval,
the student applies for a specific project to the Office of Research and Sponsored
Programs.
NOTE:
Stipend
support is available for a limited number of research projects.
Stipend support is also reserved for entering first-year medical students and
rising second-year medical students. Undergraduate students in the combined
BS/MD program may perform research projects as a volunteer while fulfilling
their credit requirement.
Program
Requirements:
-
All
students participating in the Summer Research Program are required to complete
the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) Basic Course online, available
at http://www.umdnj.edu/hsweb/Education/
-
At
the conclusion of the program students are required to submit an abstract
summarizing their research. These abstracts are published annually in the
Summer Student
Research Abstract Booklet. Click here for copy of Abstract
Guidelines.
-
Finally, students are required to present thier research projects at the
annual Student Poster Day Events usually held the first week in August.
Participation
in the Summer Student Research Program is often the student's first research
experience. It provides an opportunity for each student to evaluate the possibility
of an academic career in medicine as well as appreciate the value and importance
of biomedical research to tomorrow's physicians.
Any
interested students not enrolled in New Jersey Medical School may review the
available projects and independently arrange a volunteer position directly with
a faculty mentor.
