The Virtual Pathology Course will Launch on November 17, 2008
The Virtual Histology Course will Launch in January, 2009
The histopathology laboratory portion of DPPT and the histology laboratory portion of ISF will utilize Virtual Microscopy. This is a computer based technology that eliminates the need for microscopes and slide boxes. Pathological and histological specimens that were fixed, sectioned, and stained will be available for viewing on a computer screen. You are encouraged to bring a laptop computer to the laboratory and to work in small groups. Laboratory seating will be based on the distribution of student laptops throughout the room. NJMS will not provide computers for viewing in the laboratory. Each lab should have a 24 inch monitor for use with the instructor's laptop. The library and the computer center will also be available as sites for working with Virtual Microscopy on desktop computers. Access to the virtual images will be 24/7. You will be able to view images for the course anywhere on campus where you can acquire a wireless signal. The teaching labs are hardwired and will provide a place for rapid, high-quality viewing of each image. Faculty will be present throughout the laboratory sessions to guide you and answer questions.
The computers that you will be bringing in will require authentication on the UMDNJ / NJMS network. Please see the Technology Section below.

Important: Technology Section
2nd Years (Pathology) used the Virtual Microscopy software last year in Histology so you should be able to use the same laptop you used last year (see Access Information below); however, if you switched laptops since then, or are new to the class or never registered your laptop last year, you will need to register your laptop on the hard-wired UMDNJ network.
1st Years (Histology) will need to register your laptops.
Laptop Registration: In order for your laptop to be able to work with Virtual Microscopy from the Wet Labs in the MSB, you will need to register your laptop on the network. In order to do this, please visit our office at the following location to have one of our Techs assist you to pre-register your laptop:
MSB A Level Room 550
( Across the hall from the NJMS Student Computer Study Lab )
Hours: 9:30am - 4:30pm
After registering your laptop, you then need to install the VM software (and, depending on the OS, the ActiveX or Java client as well) - please see the instructions at:
http://njms.umdnj.edu/tss/docs/WebSlideInstall.doc
New search/finder software and patches for software
You will need to bring with you an Ethernet cable to physically connect your laptop to a data jack in the VM labs - we will have some spare cables on hand but not enough to go around for everyone. You can also use wireless, but the physical connection will be much faster (100 MB v. 10 MB over wireless). To register for wireless, please go to http://istreg.umdnj.edu/
